Senate Vote to Begin Debate on Trade Promotion Authority Legislation

WASHINGTON – Progressive Coalition for American Jobs senior advisor Mitch Stewart released the following statement today regarding the vote in the U.S. Senate to begin debate on trade promotion authority.

“Today’s cloture vote in the Senate is a major victory for President Obama’s trade agenda, moving trade promotion authority within inches of the finish line.  This legislation will allow President Obama to negotiate tough modern trade deals with unprecedented protections for workers and the environment.

“We hope that once the Senate completes debate on TPA, it will move swiftly to pass a robust trade adjustment assistance program. As Democrats, we must ensure that as part of any trade deal we extend trade adjustment assistance to provide needed support and training to workers who are affected by trade.”
