Survey of Likely Democratic Voters Nationwide Finds Overwhelming Support for Trade Promotion Authority, Trans-Pacific Partnership
WASHINGTON, DC – A nationwide poll of Democrats released today by the Progressive Coalition for American Jobs shows overwhelming support for President Obama's trade agenda. The poll, which surveyed likely voters across the country, found that 89% of respondents believe it is important for the United States economy that American companies sell products to other countries, and that Democrats trust President Obama over Congress to represent their values in trade negotiations by a wide margin – 64% to 24%.
In a press conference call discussing the poll today, former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, PCAJ senior advisors and 270 Strategies founding partners Mitch Stewart and Lynda Tran, and Benenson Strategy Group partner Pete Brodnitz discussed the poll and highlighted Democratic support for free and fair trade that grows our economy while protecting American wages, human rights, and the environment.
“When it comes to trade, what happens at the negotiating table has a direct impact on the kitchen table. And it's clear that many Democrats trust President Obama to advocate on behalf of working families across this country," said Governor Ed Rendell. "With 95% of the world's markets lying outside our borders, the United States must continue to lead on trade, instead of letting other countries write the rules without us.” The poll found strong support for passing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and giving President Obama trade promotion authority (TPA). 64% of respondents supported giving TPA to the president, rising to 78% after hearing about how TPA would impact negotiating and finalizing trade agreements.
Other key findings from the poll include:
- 52% of Democrats support the Trans-Pacific Partnership. After hearing how this agreement would benefit the U.S. economy, American workers, human rights, and the environment, support grows to a whopping 82%.
- 68% of Democrats would be more likely to vote for a Member of Congress who supports TPP.
- 75% of Democrats believe TPP would benefit the national economy.
“What’s clear is that once you get outside the Beltway, Democrats overwhelmingly support President Obama on trade, they support the President over Congress to represent their values in negotiations, and they support the TPP,” said Lynda Tran. “That’s a powerful message that we hope lawmakers are taking into account as they consider giving President Obama trade promotion authority.”
